Great Beds, Better Choices: The Story Behind Our Sustainable Materials

Carolina Pet Company started the way most good things do: with a problem to solve. Pets needed comfortable, well-made beds. Their owners deserved products that held up and looked good in their homes. That was the goal in 2001, and it still holds true today.

What we didn't fully anticipate was how the materials we chose from the beginning would add up over time. We've always filled our beds with recycled fiber made from plastic bottles. It made sense for the product. It also turned out to matter a lot for the planet. Nearly 36 million bottles later, that quiet choice has become something we're genuinely proud to talk about.

Here's a little more of that story.

It Started with the Fill

Every Carolina Pet bed starts from the inside out. The fill we've used since day one isn't traditional polyester batting. It's recycled fiber spun from reclaimed plastic bottles, the same PET plastic from water and beverage bottles, processed into a soft, high-loft material that performs just as well as anything virgin-made.

Twenty bottles go into every pound of fill. Across more than two decades of production, that adds up to nearly 36 million bottles diverted from landfills. We didn't set out to make that number happen. We just kept making good beds.

Nearly 36 million plastic bottles diverted from landfills since 2001. Every pound of fill in a Carolina Pet bed represents approximately 20 recycled bottles. That number adds up fast across decades of production.

The fill performs because of how the beds are built around it. Our channeled liner system keeps the fill from migrating away from the center, which is where most poly-fill beds eventually fail. The result is a bed that holds its shape, maintains its loft, and lasts. That matters more than it might seem. Pet beds have the same problem fast fashion does. Buy cheap, replace often, throw away more. A bed built to last three to five years instead of one is a different kind of purchase, and a better one for everyone.

GreenDog: When the Whole Bed Is the Story

The recycled fill is something we've always done quietly. The GreenDog collection makes it the centerpiece.

Every piece in the GreenDog line is built from GRS-certified recycled polyester, from the outer fabric to the fill inside. The Global Recycled Standard is a third-party certification that verifies recycled content claims through the entire supply chain. When we say 100% recycled, the certification backs it up.

The fabrics span lush velvets and textured faux linens. Materials that look and feel like they belong in a well-designed home, which is exactly the point. Sustainability shouldn't mean compromise. A GreenDog bed in Luxe Neutral or Checkered Wave holds its own in any room.

"The growing demand for sustainable luxury is real, and GreenDog was designed to meet it without asking pet parents to choose between their values, their standards, or their style." — Christian Theodossiou, Founding Partner, Carolina Pet Company

The Checkered Wave pattern is a good example of how this plays out in practice. The tonal check design, contrast cording, and Sherpa sleep surface all use GRS-certified recycled polyester, fabric and fill both. It's a bed that earns its place in a contemporary home and happens to be made entirely from reclaimed materials.

Renewed by CPC: Giving Surplus a Second Life

The Renewed Collection came from a different question: what do you do with beautiful material that already exists?

Surplus upholstery fabrics and deadstock textiles are a byproduct of furniture and textile manufacturing. High quality, fully functional, and often destined for disposal. We source them, pair them with our recycled fill, and sew each piece locally right here in South Carolina.

Because we work with what's available, no two production runs look exactly the same. Every Renewed bed is a little bit one of a kind, which feels right for a collection built around giving things a second chance.

The Renewed Collection is sewn by our team at our South Carolina factory. Making these beds in-house means we control every step of the process, and that's both a quality commitment and a sustainability choice.

Deadstock sourcing is one of the more straightforward sustainability practices in the textile space because it doesn't require anything new to be made. The environmental cost of producing the fabric has already occurred. Renewed takes that existing material and extends its useful life instead of letting it become waste.

Great Products, Made Better

We use recycled fill across our entire line, not just in collections marketed as eco-friendly. That's been true since 2001. The GreenDog collection extends that commitment to the outer fabrics using certified recycled polyester. The Renewed collection replaces new fabric entirely with surplus materials and keeps production local.

None of this started as a sustainability strategy. It started as a commitment to making products the right way. The fact that it's also been good for the planet is something we are proud of and think about every time we look at that bottle count climb.

"We've filled our beds with recycled fiber since 2001. It was the right choice for the product. The fact that it's kept nearly 36 million bottles out of landfills is something we're proud of every day." — Christian Theodossiou, Founding Partner, Carolina Pet Company

A bed that lasts three to five years instead of one is, on a per-year basis, dramatically less wasteful regardless of what it's made from. Our channeled liner system, our fabric choices, and our construction standards all exist because a durable product is a better product. That it's also a more sustainable one is a bonus we're happy to claim.
