Every Water Adventure Starts with the Right Fit

A life jacket only works if it fits. Too loose and it won't keep your dog afloat. Too tight and it restricts movement. Here's how to measure your dog, what to look for in a well-designed jacket, and how to confirm the fit before you ever leave dry land.

Behind the Design: The Body Glove Crystal Cool Pet Cooling Shirt

Sophie, the beloved black lab whose struggle with heat inspired a revolutionary pet cooling solution Behind every great product is a story of passion, persistence, and problem-solving. When we first met Teresa Hilton, we knew immediately that we'd found something special—not just an innovative pet cooling solution, but a kindred spirit who shared our commitment to quality and performance. As manufacturers developing the Body Glove pet product line, we were searching for innovations that embodied the brand's legacy of a lifestyle in the sun. Teresa had already been successfully producing and selling her crystal cooling technology on her own, but she was looking for a partner who could help bring her invention to pet parents everywhere. The fit was perfect: her patented design met our high standards for performance and durability, and our manufacturing expertise and the trusted Body Glove name could take her vision to the next level. This is Teresa's story—how a simple observation about pets struggling in the heat became a patented innovation that's now helping thousands of dogs stay cool and comfortable. Recognizing the Need In 2003, Teresa moved to Florida and adopted a new running partner, Sophie, a lovable black lab who loved the beach as much as she did. However, they had one problem: the heat. And on a beautiful, breezy summer evening, Teresa nearly lost Sophie. "We were taking it easy, and she was keeping a perfect slow pace with me," Teresa recalls. "However, rounding the second mile she went down all of a sudden on all four paws. Thankfully, a medic nearby came to our aid. He promptly picked her up and carried her to an outdoor shower where we carefully monitored her for the next 2 hours." The next day, Teresa crafted a "sun guard" made from her running apparel with one simple purpose in mind—to provide Sophie a shirt that would prevent overheating. That's it. "This whole pursuit to find the perfect cooling garment that would provide Sophie outdoor protection and me peace of mind was a labor of love. She was my first dog, and my best friend." — Teresa Hilton Teresa and Sophie became known around town as the "Dog Jeep" as they rode around in their decked out car wrap featuring a larger-than-life Sophie on the side. Sophie sadly passed in 2020, the same year Teresa was awarded the patent, but her spirit lives on in the company and high-quality shirt coined as Summerdog. "This shirt is her story and the legacy she passes on to all dogs," Teresa says. Teresa and Sophie became known around town for their dog shirts Living in Florida where the year-round climate is already hotter and more humid than the national average, Teresa became keenly aware of owners and their pets struggling with heat. "I see many people taking their dogs out on long, intense walks or bike rides when the pace is too fast and heat too strong," she explains. "My hope is that this shirt will provide the platform to educate the public and save dogs, and prevent these sad and potentially fatal incidents from happening in the future." Dr. Darrell Nazareth of Vero Beach Veterinary Hospital says that often the problems come from a lack of education. The clinic gets a lot of dogs showing signs of heatstroke, but by the time they get there, it's usually too late because the owners didn't notice the early signs. Dogs look to us to provide a safe environment and home, and unless we can spot the tell-tale signs of heatstroke—panting, pacing, excessive drooling, rapid heartbeat, bright red gums—heatstroke will continue to increase in numbers and go unreported. The Eureka Moment: From Idea to Concept Teresa tried everything on the market—from doggie bandanas to vests—but found they were either bulky, too heavy when wet or frozen, or simply gimmicks that didn't support the claims they made. She then used her own running clothes to knit together a shirt for her 85-pound Sophie, using air-wick, UV fabric shirts with the idea that it would wick away moisture from the dog's body core to keep them cool, while UV material would protect the coat and skin from sun exposure. The problem? Unlike humans who experience a cooling effect when moisture is wicked away from skin, dogs' bodies have fur and instead would keep the heat in rather than allowing it to evaporate. Wetting the shirt would only provide a cooling effect until the shirt dried. It didn't meet Teresa's criteria of finding a garment that would provide all-day sun protection and owner peace of mind. Then came the breakthrough. "I started cutting up all my other cooling accessories and garments to figure out what made them so special," Teresa explains. "Turns out, many cooling products used different types of crystals, some of which worked, and some didn't. Then, I had an idea: what if I used the same material from human sun and sports wear and added a type of cooling crystals that had been tested multiple times?" "I placed the crystals strategically around the dog's body, where heat would evaporate against the skin and areas with less fur. It was my AHA moment, and we started working on it right away!" — Teresa Hilton In 2009, after a year of researching for a solution, Teresa decided to take a leap of faith. She hired a company that helped small inventors like herself secure third-party licensing agreements for new product ideas by showcasing her drawings and ideas to their portfolio of global manufacturers. She then hired a patent attorney in New York to help her apply for a utility patent to protect her idea. Eleven years later, it came to be known as the first-ever dog shirt to prevent heatstroke. The Development Process: Trial, Error, and Breakthrough When Teresa made her first prototype, she only had ONE SIZE to sell—it was called the Sophie Shirt for 85-pound-plus dogs. Very limiting in terms of sales and getting the story out. Additionally, when she did sell a few, because they were custom to fit her dog, they were returned because they didn't fit appropriately to other big dogs. "In the early days we made a lot of novice mistakes," Teresa admits. The journey through over 100 prototypes to perfect the design The Summerdog shirt went through over 100 prototypes and iterations to get the details right. The Challenge: The primary challenge stemmed from the fact that Teresa was working with a custom pattern tailored to Sophie's specific needs, rather than a universal dog shirt pattern. Additionally, her design partner OceanTec USA was a manufacturer specializing in human clothing, which added complexity to the process. With the assistance of a professional sewer she met in the Miami retail district with experience in pet retail, Teresa finalized the project. These became the final sets of shirts she produced in small batches, available for online purchase and at farmers markets. Teresa sold her early production runs at farmers markets while perfecting the design Why Lycra? Teresa tested many blends, but found that Lycra provides the perfect combination needed for durability to support the structure of the shirt and the elasticity to stretch and contour the dog's body, creating that semi-fitted shirt that provides contact to key areas of the dog's body core to bring temperature down. The Cooling Zones: Teresa chose the strategic placement areas after testing Sophie numerous times after arriving home on hot days. "I'd place regular ice packs, like the ones you'd use in a cooler, under her arms, chin, neck and stomach and would observe how quickly she'd cool and bring her overall body temp down." Similar to the fabric testing, Teresa then tested a variety of non-toxic bulk-grade polymer crystals in sizes ranging from 1-2mm to 2-4mm. How the Crystal Cool Technology Works Four strategically placed cooling zones provide hours of temperature regulation Shop Crystal Cool Shirt The Path to Patent and Successful Partnerships To be candid, even after securing the patent in June 2020, Teresa harbored reservations. She attended the Global Pet Conference, the USPTO's Invention-Con, and sought guidance from a brand licensing attorney. However, despite her efforts, she faced rejection. "Save yourself time and money and file for patent yourself, find a mentor in the industry, be sure to make everyone you speak to sign an NDA, and believe in yourself. Every NO is just an opportunity to keep going and make your idea better." — Teresa's advice to aspiring inventors Then everything changed. "Finally I was introduced to Bo Nelson of Wholesale Pet," Teresa recalls. "Bo not only believed in my concept but also provided me with access to people in the pet manufacturing world. Their support was invaluable in securing the exposure and credibility my product deserved." Teresa sought out inventor's conferences and many pet trade shows to find the right audience for her product. That introduction led to the partnership with Body Glove—a brand synonymous with protection, performance, and an active lifestyle in the sun. The alignment was natural, and together, Teresa's vision could finally reach the pet parents who needed it most. A Natural Partnership: Body Glove Meets Innovation The partnership between Teresa's innovation and Body Glove—through Carolina Pet Company's licensing relationship—was more than just a business arrangement. It was a meeting of shared values and complementary strengths. Teresa's cooling shirt embodied everything Body Glove stands for—innovation born from real-world need, quality crafted through relentless refinement, and a deep commitment to enabling active lifestyles. Just as Body Glove pioneered wetsuits that allowed surfers to stay in the water longer, Teresa's cooling technology allows pets to stay active outdoors longer, safely enjoying the sun and adventures with their families. The California aesthetic that defines Body Glove—sun-soaked beaches, active outdoor living, and a deep connection to water—perfectly aligned with Teresa's vision. Her shirt was designed for the same lifestyle: beach days, outdoor adventures, and those precious moments when pets and their owners can fully embrace life under the sun together. Carolina Pet Company, with its expertise in bringing premium pet products to market and its stewardship of the Body Glove pet line, recognized that Teresa's patented technology wasn't just another product—it was an innovation that could genuinely improve pets' lives while staying true to the Body Glove heritage. Together, this partnership ensures that every pet can safely enjoy the active, outdoor lifestyle that Body Glove has championed for generations, creating happiness both in and out of the water. Dog Bed Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Perfect Bed for your Dog

Not all beds are created equal. The right bed can improve your dog’s sleep, joint comfort, and overall quality of life. There are so many options on the market, and it’s easy to focus on looks or price and miss what actually matters for your dog’s comfort and long-term support. With decades of experience designing and manufacturing dog beds, Carolina Pet Company focuses on durability, support, and materials that hold up to real life with pets. Quick Picks: Which Dog Bed Is Right for Your Dog? Dog Type / Use Case Best Bed Type Why It Works Senior dogs Orthopedic beds Thicker, supportive foam helps relieve joint pressure. Large breeds High-density fill beds Holds shape longer and provides better long-term support. Heavy chewers Ripstop / heavy-duty beds More resistant to tearing and rough use. Crate users Low-profile crate beds Fits crates well and stays in place. Outdoor use Water-resistant beds Easy to clean and designed for patios, travel, or garages. Why Dog Bed Quality Matters Here's something most people get wrong: a good dog bed isn't a splurge. It's basic care. The right bed affects how well your dog sleeps, how their joints hold up over the years, and whether you're replacing the thing every eight months because it turned into a lumpy pancake. For older dogs especially, this stuff compounds. A bed that relieves pressure points and keeps the spine aligned isn't a "nice to have" -- it's doing real work. Active dogs benefit too, even if they look fine. Recovery matters whether or not your dog is limping. Durability is the other side of the coin. Budget beds fail fast -- the fill compresses, the seams split, and suddenly you've spent twice as much replacing it as you would have on something built to hold up. For big dogs or heavy daily use, that math gets worse faster. As for materials: skip anything that prioritizes looks over function. What you actually want is a high-loft fill that keeps its shape, a cover you can throw in the washing machine without drama, and fabrics that earn their place rather than just photograph well. Picking the Right Type of Dog Bed There's no universal answer here. It comes down to how your dog actually sleeps and what their body needs. Orthopedic beds are the right call for seniors, large breeds, or any dog with joint trouble. The foam contours and distributes weight -- that's the whole point. These aren't just "extra comfortable," they're structurally different from standard beds. Bolster and nesting styles suit dogs that like to curl up or press against something. The raised edges aren't decorative -- they give anxious or small dogs a sense of being enclosed, which genuinely helps some of them settle. Heavy-duty and outdoor options exist for a reason: some dogs are rough on everything. Ripstop nylon and similar fabrics hold up to digging, wet paws, and patio conditions in ways that plush beds simply don't. Carolina Pet Company's Heavy-Duty/Ripstop line is worth looking at if your dog regularly destroys things. Crate and travel beds are about portability without sacrificing too much comfort. Lightweight, packable, usually with a waterproof base. Good for dogs that travel with you and need something better than a folded blanket. Key Features to Evaluate When Choosing a Dog Bed 1. Dog Bed Sizing Measure your dog stretched out flat, then add 6 to 12 inches. If your dog sprawls, account for that. A bed that's too small is one your dog will eventually abandon. 2. Material & Fabric Breakdown Ripstop: Durable, often water-resistant, and excellent for active dogs or diggers. Sherpa & Plush Fabrics: Provide warmth and cozy comfort for nesting. Cotton Canvas: Natural cotton fabric with both softness and durability  Understanding dog bed materials helps you match the bed to your dog’s activity level and your home’s environment. Some pet parents also look to heritage brands like Pendleton for design inspiration, though durability and washability matter most for daily use. 3. Washability & Maintenance This is a on-negotiable. A bed without a removable, machine-washable cover is going to become a hygiene problem faster than you'd expect. Odors, allergens, hair -- it all builds up. Removable covers solve this. 4. Construction Quality Inspect stitching, seam strength, and zipper durability. Double-stitched seams and robust zippers are hallmarks of a bed built to last, preventing premature breakdown even with daily use. Real-World Insights from Carolina Pet Company Built for long-lasting comfort Oftentimes, poly fill beds look great in stores but go flat as soon as you your dog lays on it. All Carolina Pet beds feature a zippered channeled liner- specifically crafted to keep the fill from migrating away from the center. This feature, paired with a generous amount of hi-loft poly fill means your bed will provide the long lasting support your pups need.  Sometimes we get inquiries about using a Carolina Pet Bed if a pet is a persistent digger. Fortunately, our fabrics have been designed with dippers in mind, and the channeled liner should help keep the fill in place. If over time they manage to ‘dig’ themselves a spot out of the middle - the zippered liner also gives the ability to access the liner and fluff it up, or add/remove fill to best suit your pet over time.    Carolina Pet Company Bed Collections: Designed with Expertise Our collections are the culmination of decades of manufacturing expertise, each designed with specific needs in mind. Senior & Orthopedic Dog Beds Designed for aging dogs or pets who need extra joint support, our senior bed collection features thicker cushioning and supportive fills to help reduce pressure on hips and joints, making rest more comfortable for dogs with mobility concerns. Bolster & Nesting Dog Beds For dogs who love to curl up or rest their head on raised edges, bolster-style beds offer a sense of security and added neck support. These are a great choice for pups who prefer a “nesting” sleep style. Round & Plush Comfort Beds Round dog beds and ultra-soft styles like sherpa-lined designs provide cozy, sink-in comfort for dogs that love to curl into a ball. These options work well for smaller dogs or any pet that prefers a snug sleeping space. Heavy-Duty & Tough Beds for Active Dogs For dogs that are hard on their beds, whether due to chewing, digging, or outdoor use, heavy-duty options like the brutus tough chew offer more rugged fabrics and reinforced construction to better handle everyday wear and tear. Made in USA Crafted with care in the U.S., these beds focus on quality materials and dependable construction. This collection is ideal for pet parents who prioritize domestic manufacturing and long-lasting comfort. Common Questions About Dog Beds: How often should I replace my dog’s bed? Even a high-quality, durable dog bed will eventually wear out. Typically, consider replacement every 1–2 years, but inspect regularly for flattened cushioning, torn fabric, or compromised support. What makes orthopedic dog beds different? Orthopedic dog beds use specialized, high-density foam or supportive fill that distributes weight evenly and helps relieve pressure on joints, unlike standard cushioning. Which fabrics are best for heavy chewers? Dense, tight-weave fabrics like ripstop nylon or heavy-duty polyester are most resistant to damage. Our Heavy-Duty collection is specifically designed for this challenge. How do I wash and care for my dog’s bed? Always follow the manufacturer’s label. For most washable dog beds, remove the cover and wash separately in cold water on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low. Spot clean the bed core as needed. Quick Maintenance & Longevity Tips Use a waterproof bed liner or blanket for extra protection. Vacuum hair and debris weekly. Follow a regular washing schedule for the cover to prevent odor and allergen buildup. Rotate and fluff the bed regularly to maintain even wear.
