How to Care for and Wash Your Pet’s Bed

A clean bed means a happy pet — and a fresher home.

Your dog’s bed is more than just a soft spot to nap — it’s their personal space to rest, relax, and recharge. At Carolina Pet Company, we design our beds to be both durable and easy to care for, because we know life with pets can get a little messy sometimes. Whether your pup loves splashing in puddles or just tends to drool a little extra, regular cleaning keeps their bed fresh, cozy, and long-lasting.

Caring for Beds with Removable Covers

Many Carolina Pet Company beds feature a zippered, removable cover for easy washing. Here’s how to keep yours looking and smelling great:

1. Check the Care Label

Each bed comes with specific washing instructions. Following them helps preserve the fabric, color, and shape.

2. Remove the Cover

Unzip the cover and shake it outdoors or over a trash can to remove loose fur and dirt. For heavy shedders, a quick pass with a lint roller or vacuum works wonders.

šŸ’” Pro Tip: some beds have zippers hidden on the interior between all the cushions instead of underneath. Flip the bed inside out to access those zippers and remove the liners. This applies to the Kuddlers and Comfy Cups.Ā

3. Machine Wash the Cover

Wash in cold or warm water using a mild, pet-safe detergent. Avoid bleach or strong fragrances that could irritate your dog’s skin.

  • Use a gentle cycle

  • Add an extra rinse if possible, to remove all detergent

  • Air dry or tumble dry on low heat

4. Refresh the Inner Cushion

Cleaning is the perfect time to fluff up the inner stuffing, and check for any stains on the inner cushion. Spot clean with warm water and mild detergent if needed. Be sure it’s completely dry before putting the cover back on to prevent mildew and odors.

Caring for Fully Washable Pet Mats

Some of our pet mats and travel beds are designed to be washed as a whole unit — no cover removal needed. These are perfect for crates, cars, and on-the-go pets.

To wash a fully washable mat:

  1. Shake out loose debris or pet hair.

  2. Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold or warm water with mild detergent.

  3. Air dry flat or tumble dry on low heat to maintain the shape and softness.

How Often Should You Wash Your Pet’s Bed or Mat?

The frequency depends on your dog’s habits and lifestyle:

  • Every month for most pets

  • Once a week (or more) for droolers, heavy shedders, or outdoor-loving pups

    • šŸ’” Pro Tip: If your pet is a messy napper, buy an extra cover so you can throw one in with the laundry and have a fresh cover on hand.Ā
  • After illness, flea treatments, or muddy adventures

Regular washing helps control odors, allergens, and bacteria — keeping your pet healthier and your home smelling fresh.Ā

A Fresh Bed for Every Nap

At Carolina Pet Company, we believe comfort and care go paw in paw. With a little routine maintenance, your pet’s bed will stay soft, clean, and inviting for years of happy naps.
